"Prime Brokerage" is a very general term, so you received a very broad response. When a customer Primes at a Clearing Broker, that is their Prime Brokerage account. It does not refer to a specific service. One difference between a retail account (vs your term discount brokers) is the ability to trade away from the Prime account. That allows the customer to execute trades at other brokers but have the trades ultimately clear at the Prime. One reason why they might do that is to get access to IPOs, Secondaries and/or research that their Prime does not offer. Or to get access to platforms or APIs that their Prime might not offer. When you trade away there is a regulatory minimum of $500,000 but most Prime Brokers require more. We offer Prime Brokerage for those that want to keep all their money in one place and want to trade away and with us. That is our "Prime Brokerage Account". We also offer execution only for some larger customers that need to Prime at a larger Bank, but the bank does not offer our execution services. We do both sides of that business. I hope that helps.

Prime Brokerage probably provides more hand-holding for the clients in case if you have any questions or have trouble with the platform or trading, I guess.

Safety issues if you are using a clearing bank as your prime.
Superior borrowing terms in many cases.

If you are not using multiple brokers it becomes pretty much irrelevant.

If you are using multiple brokers because they have deep benches in certain products or using a boutique brokerage for idea generation. Prime can be a big plus. Most have minimums of $5 or $10 million. You tend to borrow around Fed Funds +- instead of broker call.
Most offer Treasury+ for cash management and superior rebate rates.
