I sued a former employer in the early '90s and had to represent myself because I could not afford counsel, apart from an initial assessment. I had to subpoena about a half dozen witnesses. As a result of a number of them lying under oath, I then had to subpoena almost as many more to impeach the liars' testimonies. So, yes, I know firsthand how capable people are of being breathtakingly dishonest while maintaining a facade of decency and moral rectitude. Fortunately, I won my case.
