The company should open source the software that communicates with the gun. Then people will implement it on a Apple iWatch, which is infinitely more attractive than the watch they provide.
It is not clear that the gun would be more hackable if the software was open sourced. Initially it probably would be, but over time it would become more secure. Just like Linux over Windows.
