Conservative democrats? no such thing, nor was there ever.

The word liberal, when used as a noun, comes from 1820. It was used to describe people who were anti Whig originally. But since most Whigs were absorbed into the republican party, it's pretty obvious that democrats were always considered liberals, since they've always been anti-republican.
