You guys may recall that peter seller's (wasn't it?) movie called "Being There". Sellers plays the role of an autistic (or retarded?) gardener, named "Chauncey Gardener". What Chauncey says is nonsense, but others assume it must have deep meaning beyond their ability to fully grasp. They decide to talk up the idea of running Chauncey as a candidate for President of the United States. (I don't recall if specific political parties were mentioned, but obviously Chauncey was being promoted by Republican fat cats in the movie.) The Trump Presidency is a perfect sequel to the movie. It finishes the story by revealing what would have happened had Chauncey been elected.
It would be nice to think the boys had seen this movie but it is a little grown up for them, hell Dr Strangelove was probably too thinky for them despite the cowboy major "Kong" riding the bomb down (very much like they are now).
The list of literature you have to not read to be living in oblivion like they are is pretty much all of it.
