What Causes Huge Volume Surges?

Ok, what is the reason high volume on a stock occurs all of a sudden? I can be reading a chart and the stock will surge up .10 cents by higher and higher volume. Well, what causes this volume to occur? Why do so many people buy the stock at this same time? Thoughts?

Maybe news was released, maybe an area of resistance that is being busted through (with buyers stepping up and shorts covering). Maybe a massive buy program hit. Who knows. All you know is now the dynamics of the stock has changed and you must change with it to get in sync.
