You remember correctly. It was the first Tv debate. Nixon had kind of a perpetual five o'clock shadow beard that made him look sinister. He didn't get enough or any makeup before the debate and was sweating under the hot lights and looked terrible. Kennedy meanwhile smiled his way through like a movie star. Of course the networks were even more biased back then than now and hated nixon. He had risen to power by defeating a woman who had commie connections and the media hated him because of that.
