What $100 BILLION can buy you...

Quote from Humpy:

Africans are generally pretty hopeless. In the whole of Africa there is not even one decent Government. Their leaders are like that dangerous clown Idi Amin. Corrupt and viciously hanging onto power. They need help but their pride and attitude won't let them accept much, even well meant help.

i have visited south africa, moroco, tunisia and egypt and those countries look pretty good, but i agree the rest is just... no word to describe how f#@!# up things are going on in those countries.

Shaqi, I am sure Humpy was referring to the tribal ways and africanisms that when combined with modernisation and attempts at democracy spoil Africa, rather than anything genetic. Take away a white baby from Europe and bring it up in africa tribe it will have tribal ways and visa versa.

total BS

how do they tell if the batteries are charged or not? do they have the little strip?

Quote from FerdinandAlx:

A friend from South Africa visited Zimbabwe recently. According to him the defacto currency in the country is batteries or cigarettes. AA batteries could be exchanged for everything, cigarettes are best for bribes. The country's economy functions pretty much like a prison economy.

When the rest of the world becomes so short of food to fill the bellies of the starving millions the question will be asked - can the Africans be allowed to go on mis-managing their continent indefinately ?

they will probably blame past exploits of colonalism for this again. i always thought why then do asian countries who had endured similar treatments are doing so well now relative to african countries.

Quote from Mag Light:

Is that your idealism showing through? Can you name one black governed country void of white tourism industry that is not a cess pool of filth, dispair, disease, poverty, or famine? :)

Gabon, Botswana and Namibia. Although Botswana has a high percentage of HIV cases amongst its populace.

Does anyone know why when massive inflation like this occurs a Country does not just resort to some sort of Barter system?

To me it seems absolutely insane that this country still has all the resources and labour potential it had before but because the "money" is hyper-inflating they decide to starve. It would not be that hard to set up some rudimentary barter currency to use in a community sense. There are even precedence for this like in Alberta during the Great Depression they ended up resorting to that same type of tactic and it did work. The party that started up this system the SoCreds continued in office for another 40 years so it must have been fairly successful.
