“It is better not to take a conscription letter than to die in a foreign land as a war criminal. It is better to run away from criminal mobilisation than to be crippled and then bear responsibility in the court for participating in the war of aggression. It is better to surrender to Ukrainian captivity than to be killed by the strikes of our weapons”, the Ukrainian leader said.
According to Zelensky, “Russian commanders do not care about the lives of Russians - they just need to replenish the empty spaces left by the dead, wounded, those who fled, or the Russian soldiers that were captured”.
Yesterday, 24 September, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the package of amendments to the Criminal Code of Russia that has to do with military service. Among the amendments — criminal responsibility for voluntary surrender into captivity (from three to ten years of imprisonment).

A realistic account of Russia's implosion. While western European nations voluntarily or through ugly wars relinquished all of their territorial possessions by the mid 20th century, Moscow's Soviet empire didn't fall apart until the end of it. Today's Europe includes a number of former Soviet satellite states and it is fair to say that none regret the opportunity to escape from Russia's grip when they could.
