Since WWII the US has clung tightly to the middle east because it has had a compelling military reason to control the area Europe, Russia and Asia are vulnerable due to middle east oil.
While oil from the middle east has been important that pales in comparison with the strategic advantage of being able to turn off the supply to the world.
They have often manufactured wars to keep the excuse to stay in the region. Trump undoing all that rapidly now.
