Why squander what we have here first? I don't give two shits that we are using foreign oil one bit, and I am against us opening up the off limit drilling areas for some time to come. Doesn't it make more sense to squander others oil reserves while keeping ours in "savings" for the future? Who cares that oil is $130 a barrel, it will be $1,000 at some point in the future and we will have our own.

The logic you espouse doesn't make sense on several fronts. First, we'd need over 200 years to get their supplies down to a level where ours would make sanse. Second, it doesn't take into consideration evolution of technologies.
I don't think that we will be making any major strides for about 50 years in the arena of viable alternatives. No matter how much cash you dump into R&D at this juncture. As a concert strategy, we should be looking to add to our ability to self-sustain and that is not hard to do responsibly using all the options.
In any event, I want the government out of the mixture as it tends to do no more than make a platform for grandstanding for both sides. Politicos bring very little to the table here and we need to make sure they know that.
