It could easily cost him reelection. He is now playing the tired republican game of relying on how hideous the opposition is. He deserves to be punished for not only failing to do squat to fulfill his signature campaign promise of a wall, but he also has allowed DHS to subvert his platform and now we have the worst border crisis in history. On the other hand, Tulsi Gabbard is the only democrat candidate who is not obviously insane.

Tell me about how it is not the democrats fault. They have/had full power to cross over and help and backfill for any never-trumpers who also want to see the ruination of the country like the dems do. You can;t get a single vote- other than Joe Manchin or someone- to help out.

It will look plenty ugly at election time.

We already have an open border with Mexico so there will be plenty of experience for people to think about at election time. I already conceded a few months back, that you dems have won on the border thing. It is nothing but illegals as far and fast as the eye can see for decades to come.

They have done everything possible to make the problem worse, but Trump has ample power to stop illegal immigration. He just has not done anything. Maybe it is because he appointed NeverTrumpers to important positions, maybe it is Jared and Ivanka, maybe he was just talking crap when he promised to stop it.

Now he is not only allowing an invasion, he is dumping bogus asylum claimants all over the country, and he is allowing a massive increase in H1B type visas, aka Indians taking STEM jobs from Americans.

If the dems regained their interest in ordinary working americans and ran on a platform of securing the border and raising wages, they would win easily.
 
Let's be honest, it is not an issue Trump ever really cared about at all, just something he knew he should hit upon to solidify his base and get support for the election. Build a Wall is not a plan of action, just a slogan to rile up the masses for support. He was actually ready to abandon immigration issues until Anne Coulter insulted his ego and he suddenly got all tough on it and took the ill advised route of a shutdown. Blew up in his face, empowered the other side, and left him ball-less to do anything. Bottom line, he does not give a shit about immigration, only as much as his supproters do.

He cared a lot about tax cuts, since it benefitted him a lot, so naturally that was something he really pushed through to get done when he had the majority.

Let's face it, both the Dems and GOP are useless on this issue because they are so hands tied trying to cater to everyone rather than simply address the issue.

Democrats won't push border security because it does not rile up their base for support or, better said, they are not intelligent enough to figure out how to get their base to care about it the right way that will also draw support from the middle and center of right components.

As a matter of fact the only border security of substance came from the democrats in the form of $25 billion dollars in border security.
