We are living in a big anomaly right now, rrriiight?

The media Malcolm X was referring to was very different from today's. In fact a Trump would have been far less likely in Malcolm X's time -- media gate keepers of major networks which dominated broadcast news in an earlier era would have treated Trump as an embarrassing fool, rather than as a serious candidate. Steve Bannon, our former, and would be again, shadow President, would have had a far more difficult time promoting Donald all the way to the presidency without the internet.

At least since the end of the 19th Century we have had the equivalent of Fox News. For example throughout the earlier part of the 20th Century, Hearst News Papers dominated U.S. News. Rupert Murdoch's Fox News organization is modeled after Hearst News coverage philosophy. Fox is Hearst News Papers' reincarnated in an electronic form. What's makes a critical difference today is the addition of the internet and social media with their near total lack of gatekeeping. This unbridled media, expands the reach of Hearst-like filtered, sensationalized and doctored-opinion coverage far beyond the reach of Fox News' Talking Heads. The Fox garbage gets as much or more attention than legitimate journalism. The result is that factual, in depth reporting is now relegated more to the sidelines, almost as a curiosity maintained for a minority of the population with egghead tendencies..
Some 20 years ago, the testing board slowly removed the analytical reasoning skills from all the scholastic tests like SAT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, etc. Now, 20 years later, the fruits of their labor to dumb down America has finally paid off with all these dumbass millenials who can't think and reason for themselves.

My hope is that there is no truth here, and we are not any worse now than we were 20 or more years ago with regard to thinking and reasoning for ourselves. My concern is that you may be right, because otherwise how do we explain the discarding of the obvious, reasonable and likely in favor of the non-obvious, unreasonable, and unlikely.

I would say that there are just as many dumbass Gen X and Boomers as Millennials; we just didn't have the internet around to reveal it as clearly as now.

I think it's the Internet. GenX, where I belong, weren't always this dumb. :)

"The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses." ~ Malcolm X
