Considering the amount of federal disaster relief money poured into Puerto Rico was 30 times amount poured into North Carolina for any hurricane over the past 30 years -- the results from local and territory government officials should have been much better. Instead a vast portion of the aid and federal dollars were wasted.
The horrible recovery results in Puerto Rico an island much smaller than North Carolina and with a mere 1/3 of our population can squarely be placed on the failure of local & territory officials on the island... with much of the problem being corruption.
Can someone explain to me why not a single employee of PREPA (the Puerto Rico Power Company) was actually out fixing power lines. Does anyone in PREPA even have the qualifications and knowledge to fix a power line or substation.
Sounds like both sides acknowledge the hurricane relief efforts were very inefficient. When the US spends money on disaster relief or other big projects, ultimate responsibility for performance falls on the President, as in "The buck stops here".
Trump has promised reform on wasteful Government spending and ineffective leadership and has taken credit for a successful Puerto Rican relief effort where the results were disappointing and a large amount of money wasted.
Perhaps if Trump considered that relief efforts can have similar logistical challenges as engaging in conflict with another country, he would use his "national security" card appropiately for a change and put together an effective team to plan and coordinate relief efforts. Perhaps FEMA leadership needs to be "relieved" themselves. Maybe Trump can tap logistics professionals in our millitary to either help run relief efforts or put together and train and effective disaster response team under Trump's review.
Well I agree with you. As President Trump should have demanding answers on why the Puerto Rico relief effort was such a fiasco. He should have been demanding the Justice Department find and indict corrupt local officials on the Island. He should demanding why an entire road is filled with bottled water a year after the storm. He should have been demanding why PREPA was such a complete disaster and demanding the folding of the company with proper takeover. He should demanding very publicly what FEMA can do better.
The Puerto Rico relief effort is hardly a shining example of success. It was a complete fiasco. But 90% of the blame should be directed squarely at government officials on the island. The President of the U.S. should not taking credit. He should be demanding answers and setting a plan for improvement.

While the Feds can help and provide some relief, ultimately the State is responsible and even the local level is critical.
If you rely on the Feds, as useless leftists states tend to do, you get crushed.
If you are spending someone else's money, it is always your responsibility to spend it wisely. The US spent a lot of money in the Puerto Rican cleanup.
If you accept responsibility for something, you have the obligation to ensure that the problem gets addressed in the most effective way that is reasonably possible.
