"War on Drugs"

Quote from Rearden Metal:

"And if you want to keep coming up with stuff that can kill you, just take mix aspirin with alcohol in large quantities. I guess we should outlaw aspirin too huh?"

The point is that NONE of these intoxicating substances should be prohibited at all.

The issue is far worse than just wasting money...it's wasting money on anti-freedom oppression. This is not the vision America's founding fathers had for our country. Do you not understand the implications of the Lincoln quote in my signature?

The bottom line here is freedom. I favor it, and you do not.

Reardon, who the f*ck are you talking to on this thread? So far, not one person on this thread is against the legalization of drugs. So who is against this freedom that you speak of? I'm totally lost here on your rant.

Quote from Maverick74:

Can you believe they execute people in Russia on the spot for coming up a dollar short in taxes. True.

What???

No, it's actually true, look it up. I don't know if they still do this, but for decades it was common practice.

You seem to think that if anti-capitalistic health care laws are already in place, the government should be in the business of prohibition enforcement.

Am I wrong? The socialism we both oppose is an entirely separate issue. Whether or not the socialist health care laws are voided (this is an entirely separate issue).... do you agree with the following statement?:

Victimless crimes are never crimes. All narcotics should be legalized, and people should have the freedom to do as they please as long as they respect the bodies and property of their fellow citizens. Law enforcement should only deal with actual crimes, and all drug sniffing dogs should be re-trained to find explosives. All 'drug criminals' deserve an immediate pardon, and released. Live and let Live.

If you agree with the above, we do indeed have nothing to argue about. Once again, socialistic health care laws are an entirely separate issue here. I believe we both advocate absolute laissez-faire in ALL sectors of the economy.

Well, you apparently.

Or do you endorse the legalization of drugs regardless of the effect (which you overstate) it will have on your insurance premiums?

And just to add my .02, fuck man, this 'war' is just soooooo fucking stupid it boggles the mind. It's not even working for fuck's sakes... who that wants drugs can't score them? So, at the very best it has achieved nothing. But in reality it has achieved far worse than nothing and is doing real fiscal, moral and social damage.

I did try to look it up. Not surprisingly, since the notion is so utterly absurd, I turned up nothing. I highly, highly doubt that it was even the case during communist era.

OK, well you must not have read one single post of mine. I don't disagree with any of the above. And no, I do not believe the government should be in the business of prohibition enforcement. I guess the be completely honest, I don't really care, I would be lying if I said I cared one way or the other but let's say I agree for the moment with everything you said.

Let me ask you something. Do you know that in most states, in order to get a drivers license, you need to have proof of insurance. Do you know why? Because driving is a privilege, yes, it's also a personal freedom, but also a privilege. The insurance protects the outside world from your reckless driving.

All I want is for the privilege of doing what ever drugs you want, anywhere you want, and in any quantity you want, you just have to get your own insurance policy, just like car insurance. This is not enforcement by any kind. If you were caught with drugs and didn't have insurance, I think you should be fined, not jailed, just like with cars.

If I was a hardcore druggie and someone told me that for a few hundred bucks a month or a little more I could do all the drugs I wanted, would never go to jail, and would have no restrictions on what I used, I would do it in a heartbeat. I don't understand this. Isn't that worth cost of freedom to you? I mean I can't get a car and drive without insurance even though I have never been in an accident in my entire life. I believe in freedom to the highest degree, but freedom has to be fought for and paid for. It doesn't come for free. Just ask the people of the middle east. Some freedoms costs money, others cost lives and blood, but make no mistake about it, there is always a cost. Are you willing to ante up?

Tax collectors should thus be outlawed, as they are lethal to citizens

OK, I guess we're pretty much in agreement after all. I did read all your posts here, and you did make quite a few anti-drug statements. Mandatory drug insurance? OK, that would certainly be far better than the current fascist oppression.
