WaPo Settles $250 Million Lawsuit With Covington Teen Nick Sandmann

Based on previous reading (I will try to find the source) - there are numerous settlements between media companies in the U.S. and people who have sued them each year. Most we never hear about since they involve business people or non-entertainment people. The media companies and their insurers find it easier to settle than pay legal costs for a protracted period of time. I expect most settlements are small - more like low 5 figure than 7 figure.

Even with the Sandmann settlement I don't see major media companies changing their ways - they simply view these settlements as a cost of doing business. I don't think their premiums will skyrocket to a level that forces them to thing about changing anything.

There's also the fact they did nothing wrong as can be seen by the statement on the settlement agreement

Seeing that most settlements are reached in situations where A) they did do wrong and B) they wanted to avoid the expense of a long litigation. --- leads to most settlement agreements stating that "they did no wrong" to avoid both bad publicity and further legal entanglements.

Plenty of settlements are reached where the party did nothing wrong but isn't cost effective to seek a just outcome

Also the lawsuit was $250 million....but the settlement was nondisclosed.......some here are thinking the paper paid out $250 million because of the bullshit headline....

No court would have awarded that huge sum of money in the history of torts because of that poor reporting...some of you are in fantasy land. Since the settlements are private we will never now but based on historical settlements I can bet you the kid took 6 figures and not 7 figures.... the amount it would cost the paper to defend with their lawyers and get a verdict in their favor.

Rumors on the internet (which are probably just guesses) has the settlement amount at low 7 figures or high 6 figures.... nowhere near $250 million.

The fact that they had an NDA, it must be 8 figures. Say $10 million or more? A trial with punitive damages in awards probably, would have cost much more. Fake news lost once, again. If more people will sue for the slander inflicted on them by these extreme liberal rags, they would all go out of business.
