If some country in the middle of nowhere all the sudden discovers it has the largest gold repository in the world, easily mined, and their GDP quadruples in year one... their defense budget will follow suit.

And? There was a spike leading upto 2015 because of the Yemen war, this is a meaningless figure considering we are talking about what Saudi's are spending on defense imports - and not overall military spending which is completely different at times of war.
