I remember having read an article saying retail traders prefer options and that is why certain HF tend to sell options and trying to keep stock prices where they are / decrease volatility. I can imagine big banks do that too, that beeing the reason vix is not as high as it could be... Day trading ES futs I see more and longer lasting trading ranges then last year which is sort of a confirmation.
