SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A California school district on Monday reversed a basketball tournament ban on T-shirts reading "I Can't Breathe" and said it would allow high school players to wear the shirts during warm-ups as long as they do not cause problems, lawyers said.

With backing from school officials, the athletic director at Fort Bragg High School, previously told the boys and girls teams from Mendocino High School they could not play in the three-day event if they wore the shirts inspired by the last words of a New York man who died after an officer put him in a chokehold.

So if a student wants to wear a T-shirt reading "I support the NRA" or better yet "I support Officer Daniel Pantaleo" that should be ok as the student is expressing their own beliefs.

Of course you fail to mention that this is a community where a cop was killed by a thug in March...

"School district lawyer Patrick Wilson said Fort Bragg officials wanted to avoid the cost of a legal battle but remained concerned the shirts could cause a disruption in the community that's still mourning the death of a sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty in March.

"The concern is, you are in a packed auditorium, this is a polarizing issue and it's about something that happened in New York," Wilson said. "I think it's fine for people to protest about it, but emotions are still raw in that area."
 
The students associated are athletes, representing their school and team. Personal individualism should be kept to athletic effort on the court and not expressed in their politically inspired clothes worn during an official school activity.

The Coach was correct. It's sad that a few of our "Prima donna" professional athletes believe they are bigger than the game or their teams and fail to understand their position as a "role model". Silver should have enforced the league's "dress attire" policies and we wouldn't be discussing this.

3,361 more to go.....i would think they could pool the resources and provide more beds for the buck in a larger dormitory setting. It's a nice feel good story but nine beds does very little to help.

Nor does it address the reality that most long-term homeless prefer to live on the streets and usually abandon any permanent structure arrangement very quickly to go back to living on the streets. Most have mental illness issues.

The short-term homeless usually will accept free housing and a hand-up to get out of their situation - but these structures are not aimed at the short-term homeless who are normally regular low-income families that missed a rent payment and are trying to find a new permanent living arrangement.

Lol, and Democrats do? The only concern Democrats have for anyone is in trying to buy their votes and ensnaring them into a web of lifelong dependency on social services.

My wife manages a crisis intervention/dependency clinic for the state. They are brought several homeless consumers on a daily basis needing some type of medical/mental evaluation and or treatment. There are some who just need a meal and a place to get warm or sleep, but a good percentage of those she handles have some form of mental problems and need help.
