Here's a question. ... Are folks of Asian decent now considered "people of color"? That's what they were calling that lady that won Boston. She looked Asian to me. Last name was Wu I think. I thought that term was reserved for "brown" people. today.
That whole issue as to whether Asians are POC's is evolving in the minds of the progressives, or deteriorating to the rest of us.
I noticed too that NPR also referred to her as a person of color. I single them out because I know for a fact that they have had programs with guests that were very lefty but laid out the reasons why they objected to including Asians in that category. So the lefties are still trying to make it up as the go along so who can know what the right answer is.
The problem seems to be that lots of Asians are successful in including Asian Indians so many lefties want the POC definition to mean you are still marginalized in some ways. (just play along, it is all absurd). So for example if you are from Hyderabad and run a small tech company you are no longer a POC but if you are Filipino working at the seafood processing plant you are still POC.
But- and it gets complicated- it is still okay to use the term POC if you are just using it emphasize that you are not whitey, but not going so far as to claim some benefit from it that might take away from blacks.
So, we see that in play in Boston. The lefties lean over backwards to highlight that Michelle Mu, the mayor elect is a person of color. But if she or a family member cross the Charles River to try to apply to Harvard or MIT these days, then those institutions keep going to the court to argue that Asians are not real POC's if by that you mean "worthy and eligible for affirmative action entry and related benefits." Ironically, Michelle actually got into Harvard Law before it got too crazy and she is an acolyte and former student of Pocahontas. So she knows the games that can be played with all this stuff. Just ask Poco.
This whole POC dilemma is actually getting worse. Just a couple years ago we would not be having this discussion. The media would just say that Boston had elected "an Asian American." A perfectly fine and respectful honorific. The problem is that the progressives are at war with the Asian Americans these days and with all Americans and with all references to America or someone's nationality. They particularly target Asians with their hatred because they think that Asians embody a lot of American virtues, strengths, and loyalties. HORRORS!.
You have probably read the manifesto that the progressives keep spouting: ie. math is racist, nuclear families suck and mommy has a dick, technology, business skills, long term planning for life goals, working hard, studying hard,, pursuing intellectual type things is all colonial white man legacy stuff. Yeh, right. How many Asians believe that? Probably the ugliest manifestation of this was a while back when the loon on the San Francisco School Board said that her issue was that "many Asians use white supremacist strategies to get ahead." Man, that is raw and ugly. So my point again is that some of lefties use this POC thing in regard to Asians as long as it is just to point out that "whitey lost another race" but if you start using it to mean that they are real POC'S like blacks (their argument, not mine) they start getting twitchy real fast. Thus, it is weaponized term that gets exploited and used and abused as needed.
Having said all of that, I have not laid any criticism on to Michelle Mu. I read a little snippet about how she - while still a student- was caring for her mom, and siblings and moved them to Boston to live with her while she was still struggling herself. I put points up on the board for her for that regardless of what her politics are or are not.
You may recall that Andrew Yang said "I am Trump's worst fear- an Asian guy who loves math." To be honest, that was pretty effin funny. But also, to be honest, he is the progressives/squad's worst fear too. Yeh, he is an Asian guy using white supremacist strategies to get ahead, or so the argument goes with some.
