Why don't you just ask him and spearhead the initiative? I doubt he would object. Wouldn't you like the ultra high returns with such a brilliant & top notch trader/hedge fund manager?

it's really none of my business as we are focused on more niche strategies rarely involving equities or equity indexes.

The book was written in the early/ mid 90s. It's reasonable to suppose Surf's information is ~15 years fresher.
