Veterans

Thank you for your service

Personally, I'd like to see the US have mandatory military service like many other countries. I believe we vets have a different sense/appreciation of what it means to be an American that those who never served don't have. The notion of "2 years of service to your country" is loaded with positives for us all. "Service" doesn't necessarily mean combat in a foreign land. The military has LOTS to do that doesn't involve front-line fighting. And if one isn't physically capable of serving, 2 years in something like VISTA would provide much of the same benefit. Everyone who serves has done SOMETHING to help and/or defend his homeland... and that's different from just "being here" or being here and being a parasite.

Though I was happy to see the draft abandoned 40 years ago, the consequences, which may be nothing more than correlation, have been unexpected. As I've posted before on this subject, I can't help but wonder if many of the problems we've had with "youth", most of whom are now parents and even grandparents, would never have arisen if everyone at either 18 or 22 (if deferred) were required to spend four years in the active military.

Oh, and who am I to not show off one of my 10,000 USMC t-shirts? And if any of you had to look closely to see I went through the Pittsburgh OSO office, you missed what's made my Veteran's day..well, very nice!
