Very disappointed with Sterling Trader Pro's delays, looking for alternatives

I have been using Sterling Trader Pro with my broker, which is 11.7 and having issues with logging in, being disconnected randomly, and receiving data refresh messages, then kicking me out.

The Trader ID and password I am using are correct and I even had my broker reset my password, but I was still having issues logging in with 11.7, so I went to Sterling's site, downloaded the most recent version, 11.9. And I disabled my ant-virus. I have Fios Gigabit, 940/880 Mbps.

I previously downloaded a test version of DAS Trader Pro, and when I logged in I set up my test account under default, setting it to primary, though, many times, it would shift my Sterling default-test account to my DAS Trader Pro default-test account in my Level II Montage. Very odd.

I uninstalled DAS Trader Pro and Sterling Trader Pro, power-cycled my laptop, logged back into Sterling, with the same password and it worked, and it automatically loaded the previous layout I had saved and loaded.

I checked under destinations, and I saw the DAS Trader Pro account. Really! I tried to switch it but to no avail. Then I logged off, rebooted, tried logging back in, with the same creds and I couldn't get in, receiving an "Unable to connect/and or redirect from SCSD. Please verify that the Trader ID is correct. Contact your manager if necessary." I have the right Trader ID and password, as I was able to log in yesterday.

I had my broker reset my password earlier in the day. Now I have to wait to Monday to have it fixed, which is annoying.

I had called Sterling customer support a few days ago with platform-specific questions and the guy I was speaking to was so rude. He was talking but not listening to what I was saying.

The guy said he could only help me this one time and that I would need to call my broker, as that is part of the contract, and he said we're really busy.

I asked him if you're not helping customers then what are you busy with? And he said internal things that I can't discuss. He was like you can watch YouTube videos, and I said I have. Honestly, they're pretty bare-bone, by the way, and I've even been reading the lackluster manual.

I said well maybe I should reconsider paying $1,200 for the software for the year, and he said we're billing your broker. Really?

I also tried email Sterling support and they are so slow, it has taken over a week to get any responses, and the ones that have been answered are very sparse.

I haven't gone live yet, but I am concerned. I don't want to be in a trade when my platform disconnects me and I can't log in. I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions to fix my issues.

Thanks.

2ripchic4-who is your broker? Is it a prop firm or broker like Lightspeed? I have many Sterling users and no problems like you describe. And, most of my Sterling Users are in Asia connecting on the other side of the Earth. Only Australia would be further away.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your response. I am using CMEG.

Hi Bob,

I also wanted to add BATS, JPCC, ITGI, and CCMX routes, and I tried to manually add them in Sterling Trader Pro, but unfortunately, I can't. I pinged them on it and, unfortunately, they can't be added. I previously mapped out my routes to ARCA and NSDQ.

I wanted to be able to customize a Hotkeys to buy and sell 30% of buying power, but Sterling Trader Pro doesn't have that functionality.

I created several new Hotkeys, to buy 25%, 40%, and 50%, of buying power, as MKT and limit (bids & asks). Tested them in my DEMO account, and I get error messages "Invalid Price for % of BP left."

Not sure why? I sent their tech support team an email, waiting for a response. Previously they mentioned that the % of BP with Hotkeys would use market orders. I always thought I could use limit orders for Hotkeys (buying and selling different %'s of BP).

I confused with the difference between an S-STP and an S-STP LMT. I know they're both stops orders, and I thought the S-STP, once triggered & filled, after hitting its price, converts into a market order? In the Sterling Trader Pro platform in my Level II Montage, I had STP, S-STP, and S-STP LMT. I pinged them, and they said STP and STP LMT are older stops, so I removed them from my Global Level II settings and now just have Limit, MKT, S-STP, and S-STP LMT.

@kmgilroy89: supposing for an instant is not Sterling Trader Pro, I would check:

- Network Interface Card: settings on
- force Gigabit Master
- force Full Duplex 1 Gbps or 1000/1000
- disable TCP Checksum Offload IPv4
- disable Green Internet
- disable TCP/IP 6 if you don't need it
- disable UDP Checksum Offload IPv4

Windows:
- disable Windows Updates during the trading session
- Power save settings High Performance

Trading Technologies provides a sort of checklist for Client Side Optimization.

Therefore ask your Sterling/ Pro IT guys a similar document for 'best practices'.

Finally check with Windows Task Manager the Performance section and % of CPU cores used during those delays: you could have background processes trashing your PC performance.

Hi,

I have a REALtek PCIe GBE Family NIC. If I make these changes would I have any issues? Wasn't sure if I needed a more advanced NIC.

Only your broker can add routes.

None of the software we or STT offer, as far as I know, has the ability to enter orders based on the dollar about of the stock you want to buy/sell. In turn, they can't use your BP as a reference. Sterling, as far as I know, requires an order in shares to open, but can liquidate positions based on the percentage of your position. E.G. close 25%, 50%, 100%. Not based on $$s.

When triggered, a Sell Stop will create a market order. When triggered, a sell stop limit will create a limit order. The market order will get a fast execution but give no protection as to price. The Limit order will not get executed in the stock is trading lower than your limit, but gives you control. I'm not a fan of Stop orders. I would always use a STOP limit and make the limit one I can live with.

You should be asking your broker these questions, not STT.

Thanks very much. I pinged my broker, but I haven't heard back yet. I always use limit orders. I was thinking about using a Stop Limit at some point.

I heard with DAS Trader Pro you can customize your Hotkey to any % of BP. I see, ok, I will try to BTC and sell using my BP% Hotkey the next time I am into Sterling Trader Pro.

What do you think about the login error with Sterling Trader Pro and the DAS Trader Pro DEMO account being displayed next to the Equity field in Sterling Trader Pro? I am not sure if it's a broker issue or an issue with Sterling Trader Pro. When I could log in to Sterling I was able to see my Sterling demo account next to the Equity field, and I had to click my mouse, hit the drop-down, and select it when I first customized it.

Once I am in, I would like to keep my Layout, but I am not sure that's possible, and I might have to start from scratch. Hopefully, when I can log in, I can install the newer version with no issues. I heard STT improved system performance with the new release.

Do you think it's normal, after doing a fresh install of Sterling Trader Pro, to have it automatically load my saved Layout? I did point my saved Layout to Load the Layout previously in Sterling Trader Pro.

Delete all old layouts and it will default to what the install offers.
