Vegas - Recommendations on where to stay

Hey guys,

I am graduating in December and my wife and I are planning on going to Vegas for a few day vacation to celebrate and have some fun. Flying out Friday morning and leaving Monday. I have stayed at the MGM before, but I was 16 at the time (23 now) so I couldn't do much (other than take all the escort handout cards LOL) and had no involvement in booking the trip.

I intend to play a good bit of blackjack while there and maybe a few other games and I'm sure my wife will hit up the slots. We might do a show, possibly go to one of the clubs, and then just do the general sight seeing stuff.

Anyways, just curious if any of you all have recommendations on where to stay? I don't intend to be in the room much and view whatever we save on the room as money to put towards other activities, but still would like a decent room.

I would prefer to stay where I am gambling, for the comps factor (if any) and convenience, but I am still open to either and don't really know much on any of them as I have only been the one time. Any input on the Rio? It was about half the cost of those on the strip and looked decent.

The Rio, last I remember (haven't been there in about 5 years or so), was at the end of the strip. Lots of walking required to see any of the other nice hotels and sights. You're really out of it.

I'll be staying at the Wynn (I leave tomorrow) for a conference. I hear it's awesome, but will report back.

I've stayed at the Bellagio (phenomenal), the Venetian (also spectacular), the Luxor (cheaper, but still nice - rooms a bit older) and Harrah's.
 
Just google Las vegas hotel deals or similar. Almost anything on the strip is ok. You need to take cabs around to other hotels just to see the surreal and fun and to see where you may stay next trip. Don't walk, everything is farther away than it looks. There are monorails between some. Every hotel will give you a card and track your gambling activity as that's why they exist. If they like it you'll get discount offers in the future. No reason to go off the beaten path, especially on a short stay. I have a home there and live there part of the year.

Yeah, you all present good points on the distance. Probably a good idea to stick to the strip so we can be within walking distance of everything. I'll do some searching tonight and see what all I can find.

My wife an I go 1-2 times a year and stay at Caesars or MGM, lately its been Caesars. I don't know what it costs since we always get comped on the room and most meals. There's a ton of casinos off the strip, some really good. But you will probably want to stay on the strip. I used to live there years ago and back then some of the properties near the downtown were being renovated and offered a good deal. You can probably get a good deal at Excalibur which is in a good location on the strip. I'm Headed there in about 3 weeks.
