I have a friend (former neighbor) that lives now in Australia.

She stated in an email exchange that they're under a medical alert for the Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV)...

20-30% have died after it attacks the brain. Those most vulnerable have been traveling to/from Japan and Australia since early January 2023.

Deaths so far but hospitalization a lot higher:
  • New South Wales (14)
  • Northern Territory (2)
  • Queensland (2)
  • South Australia (6)
  • Victoria (11)
