Will Gov. Cooper lift NC's mask mandate?
Gov. Roy Cooper said his intent has been to keep the current mask mandate in place until two-thirds of adults receive at least one COVID shot. But Thursday's CDC announcement could mean that the state's mask mandate is changing.

Cooper said his staff is going to evaluate the CDC's new mask guidelines to make their next decision.

"I want to make sure that our doctor's and professionals have time to examine what it is, and then we react accordingly," Cooper said on Thursday.

Cooper doesn't expect 66% of the state's adults to have a single shot until "sometime in July."

North Carolina has updated out guidance to align with the new CDC guidance for the most part. Noting that if the infection rate goes up into the red zone for a county then restrictions will be re-applied for that county. This change to follow the CDC guidance is occurring despite North Carolina not being at a 50% fully vaccinated rate for adults (nor being at a 66% vaccination rate for adults for one dose).

Governor Cooper's announcement that North Carolina no longer requires social distancing or masks gave many people cause for celebration – but not everyone is comfortable with the eased restrictions.

New COVID cases are increasing by around 1,300 each day, and only 36% of the state is fully vaccinated – leaving a large percentage still feeling unprotected.

About half of the adults in the state have had one shot, but many are still waiting for their second dose – and some of them are nervous about the sudden lift in restrictions.

"I adore Cooper, but I don't agree with this decision," said Clarissa Lewis. "I think the mask mandate should have remained in place longer. It's too soon. We are nowhere near herd immunity."

"I'm happy about the progress, but I'm not quite ready to take my mask off in public," said Patric Pederson.

There’s a lot of people with immunity from having the virus that can make this case legitimately.
 
They should have made fun of people wearing masks outdoors by having people wear helmets to protect against satellites and then had fauci and Newsome and all the moron leaders of mushrooms say...wear 2 to be safe.

That would have been funny.
