And the reason why they think they need more people is because:
“We also need people innovation,” Buckles said. “We need people who are going to invent things and cure diseases and produce art and all these things to keep the economy growing.”
Yeah what makes you think immigrants would necessarily be the ones "inventing things, curing diseases and producing art and all those things to keep the economy growing"? What's wrong with born-in-the-America workers? Why can't they be the ones "inventing things, curing diseases and producing art and all those things to keep the economy growing"? It's not people that you need to invent things and cure diseases and produce art and all these things to keep the economy growing, it's quality people that we need that can fulfill these roles. But instead of spending to import people, why not invest in the people who are born in America? Why can't that be a solution? Instead of immigration, maybe what we need is better education to educate and produce more capable workers that can "inventing things, curing diseases and producing art and all those things to keep the economy growing" and investment in research and development to support and encourage people who are already engaged in "inventing things, curing diseases and producing art and all those things to keep the economy growing" ?? Why can't we do that? Why is that we have sacrifice existing home-grown talent in favour of bringing people from outside of the country?
Not intending to put down immigrants, unless you are a Native Indian, we were all immigrants at one point but I just feel that time has changed to the point that today the benefit that we receive from immigration is not being justified by the cost as demonstrated by various countries in Europe that are finding out the hard way. At the same time, there are alternative solutions that are just as effective or even more effective in resolving any possible problems that could be a result of the drop in birth rate besides immigration such as improving education and developing automation and robotics. There are countries such as Japan and South Korea that have had years of negative population growth but are still thriving without resorting to immigration. And even China that is experiencing a drop in birth rate as well but is not relying on immigration to solve this "crisis" in the potential shortage of workforces predicted by these doomsday economists. If Japan and South Korea can do it without immigration, so can the United States!!
