The men still pull the World Cup money wagon. The men's World Cup in Russia generated over $6 billion in revenue, with the participating teams sharing $400 million, less than 7% of revenue. Meanwhile, the Women's World Cup is expected to earn $131 million for the full four-year cycle 2019-22 and dole out $30 million to the participating teams.

It doesn't matter how good you are. It matters how much revenue you generate. The U.S. women's program generated more revenue than the men's program in 2015 because they won the world cup, but they've generated significantly less revenue over the past decade.

To inject a little rational discussion in between the hyperbole.

The problem is athletes are paid in relation to the revenue the sport generates. That is why in general a top 10 golfer will not make as much money as a top 10 PG in the NBA on salary/winnings. A major hockey player will not earn what an NBA star earns.

Across male sports the salaries differ based on revenue pools available in the sports which obviously come from ticket sales, merchandise, and most importanlty TV rights. So in that regard, teams from the Premiere Leauge will always earn way more money than MLS teams and that trickles down to salaries and individual salaries are also disproportionate.

So unfortunately, when we look at Women's World Cup v. Men's, the revenue pool generated is vastly different and that difference trickles down to the % each team gets and the $ that can be paid to each player. It is not based on who performs better.

The Men's team performs worse than women's team but the salaries of each is not decided by the U.S. it is decided by the share FIFA hands out from the large revenue pool. Also pay grades are not set up by U.S. National team HQ based on who does better. Moreoever, unlike most countries, U.S. soccer federation is a private entity.

As a fan of the woman's team I understand the feelings on disparity of pay based on their success (i.e. they win the biggest soccer prize possible for their sport and country but financially cannot profit from it like the men do) but it is more an issue of World Cup Men event earning billions and the female World Cup earning millions.

That disparity will always exist because the female game of soccer is not at the same level and the pay difference is not an intent to discriminate but a reality of the business. No one expects the WNBA players to make the same as the NBA in the U.S., same with soccer globally.

Good news is that in the last 20 years the Women's World Cup has grown so much that the revenues and salaries have picked up quite a bit and there are more women's leagues around the world. That is why more teams are making it more competitive. As for pay, the more money the event makes the more money the players make and that is not in the hands of any single country.

I was just using world cup as an example. There is significantly more money in men's soccer than women's soccer. That's why the U.S. men's program typically generates significantly more revenue than the women's program despite the fact that they suck.

Check out this article. It has a chart that shows how much revenue each program generates annually. The women generated more revenue in the year they won the world cup, but they generated about 40% less than the men over the 6 year span of the chart.

You might be surprised to find women's tennis is pretty popular and on par with the men's game. The women's finals of a tourney is the smae as the men's final.The female champions get similar endorsement and commercial deals as the men often and they are competing in the SAME tournament, unlime men and women sports in soccer. Remember tennis is few sports where men and women compete in same tourney at same time and it is an individual sport. Big difference. In that case it made no sense why the women's prize was so much less than the men's when the pool of prize money was being generated by both in the SAME tournament.

Ahh you went back to personal opinion bias. Women's tennis may not be your cup of tea but it is still very popular globally and at the 4 majors. Nadal v. federer may be a huge draw because of who they are and their rivalry but it is ok you don't like women's tennis and their viewership may come in just under the men, but these are individual champions at the Same tourney.

It depends on WHO is in the final.

At the U.S. Open, for example, the women’s final drew more television viewers than the men every year from 2010-14. Did the men receive lower prizes those years? I doubt it. The Woman's game is in flux as the Williams' sisters fall off but it is an individual sport so personalities and skill drive the ratings. No reason why their winnings shouldn't be similar. it is not like golf where they are completely segregated in tounraments, coverage and where they play.

Oh in 2018 out of the top 5 net worth players in tennis which includes tournament winnings and endorsements, 3 were women. Out of the top 10, 6 were women. So apparently sponsors, advertisers, and tournaments do think women are on par with men in global earnings. Again, bringing in tennis does not work for your argument, it is a different animal than soccer. Individual sports are not the same in earnings as team sports.
