While the speed of catchup is surprising even experts in the field it does seem to be 2-3 generations behind. Apple will be releasing its new phones with processors manufactured on the 3nm nodes.

I have been saying for over 10 years that the choice of the West to manufacture top high tech in China was a disastrous decision. Globalization works with honest trading partners. China has been stealing left and right. Tooling, calibration, materials, design, nothing is safe from the long fingers of the Chinese. The only way to safeguard IP is to NOT let it fall into the wrong hands in the first place, meaning, not to manufacture in China, period. There is no way China could catch up that quickly without a horrendous ip theft.

In that case, China would have not given you access to their 1,3 Billion consumers. Henry Kissinger did this trade off with Chinese leadership some 50 years ago. 5 decades of economic growth shows it was the RIGHT decision at that time.

Nowadays, where we ALL live in saturated markets, it is a different. Protectionism has grown everywhere.

Really? You can't conduct honest trade between honest trading partners? Worked between Europe and the US/Canada/Japan/Austria/...for decades. No, the huge mistake was made to let China cheat its way to prosperity. The first bullshit after WTO entry should have immediately been called out and tit for tat applied. Harsh retaliations must be applied to dishonest counterparts. This was not done. Huge mistake.
