It always annoys a lot of historians here (and I guess me also) when people think WW3 hasn't really started yet. It's a wrong nomenclature, since historian professors will tell you straight up, the first WWI was simply named the Napoleon era wars though, so that's where the nomenclature first started to run amuck. And no one really even cares to study it anymore, since they improperly assume it was only a French thing, and the French don't care because it was something they LOST.

As for proxy wars, the US already fought them with Russia... and yes, we almost ended up with nuclear wars with Russia in the past. The Korean war was a very good example where a proxy almost turned out into a straight-up direct-direct hotwar with Russia threatening to go Yolo on the West. Luckily it turned out to be a partial bluff...
