US - most f*cked up religiously extremist country this side of Saudi Arabia

Cutten

Here's something right up your alley:

American: "Hey friend, where are you from?"
Brit (heavily accented): "I come from a place where we do not end our sentences with prepositions!"
American: "OK -- where are you from, jackass?"

:) :) :)

Quote from Gord:

Stalin and Mao would be proud of you. When do your "unconstitutional, immoral brainwashing groupthink" re-education camps open?

Since when does objecting to paedophile religious rape cults make one a totalitarian?

Quote from Cutten:

I believe you are confusing us with Holland or Canada. Presumably you are one of the 93% of Americans without a passport, or the ones who can't locate their home state on a map, let alone a foreign country? ;)

No, I am talking about the UK. You know, where you have a significant radical Muslim population that does not want to assimilate with the rest of the population. Your presumptions are incorrect. I have a passport, and have been to the UK a couple of times. Rather than attack me, you should ask yourself this question: Is the radical Muslim population in your country a more significant problem than the few hundred nuts on a compound in Texas (US population 300,000,000+)? It appears your extreme dislike of the US is clouding your thinking.

He (Cutten) sounds to me like one of those radicals you are referring to...

Quote from Cutten:

Actually you came from Europe and drove Native Americans out from their land

As I remember, it was the British, French, Dutch and Spanish who came and drove out the first native Americans. The United States and Canada had to get out from under your clutches. Ever heard of the "Commonwealth?"

Who do you think Mohandes Gandhi was leading India against? The Polish?

but this isn't a history thread

In other words, you are too embarrassed to discuss the lengthy, factual list of British offenses and current religious direction...

The trail of tears happened post War of Independence, as I recall.

Regarding the other stuff - as I said, I was discussing the state of religious cults and whackos in 2008 USA. That's called staying on topic. If you want to start a thread on colonialism, I will humour you and chip in with a "Yeah I agree, colonialism was wrong" like every other sane person. What's your point?

Also, why do you think I care about the crimes of various UK governments? Why would I be embarrassed by the actions of people who I have never met and whose only commonality with me is that they grew up in the same country (albeit several generations ago)? Unlike most people I don't identify with a country or government just because I was born there, and I definitely don't identify in any way whatsoever with people who died before I was born. I judge a country, its government, and its people on merit, not my coincidental links to it based on an accident of birth. Just because you have an irrational and prejudiced attachment to your country of origin does not mean that everyone feels the same.

If that were the title the thread and the content of your post, there would be no debate. The title of your thread "US - most f*cked up religiously extremist country this side of Saudi Arabia" does not covey that sentiment. BTW, have you ever been to the US?

Were you born naturally stupid or do you really have to work at it?

Taking one example and attributing it to "a definite powerful minority of religious nutjobs who need to be brought to heel and prevented from f*cking up kids and dominating entire areas (e.g. Utah, lots of the deep south) with their unconstitutional, immoral brainwashing groupthink agenda" is what is commonly known as bigotry. Not to mention the title of your thread.

You are nothing more than a petty bigot.

Well this is politics and religion section, so a little exaggeration may have crept in there, I gotta admit. Yes I've been to the US a fair bit. I do think it's the most religiously extremist country in the civilised world. No other 1st world country would tolerate some paedos setting up a ranch to breed young women then repeatedly rape them in coerced marriages, just because they called it a religion. IMO the US needs to seriously adjust its social attitudes to religion and reduce its role in general "outward" society, making it more a matter of individual conscience. Religion is used to get away with far too much there, as we are seeing in this case. It's no different to the 9/11 whackos.

But it's not one example - the US is full of cults, and extreme religious sects. From Jim Jones through David Koresh to this current mob, or the more mainstream sect demagogues like Falwell and Robertson, these people are dangerous and mess with the minds of impressionable youngsters. Brainwashing kids with this BS is a mild form of mental child abuse, kinda like raising them to believe the earth is flat or that astrology governs the movements of planets. Actually breeding them like cattle is beyond the pale.

If France, UK, Germany, Canada etc had this kind of thing going on as regularly, I would lambast that too. But it seems to be a US-dominated phenomena. It's the only country in the 1st world where this lunacy goes on with such frequency.
