I'm talking about 2008, not the 19th century (a time when Britain was also full of whacko jesus freaks, and being an atheist was a capital offence).

Most people in the UK are either irreligious, or keep it a private matter rather than a basis for organising society. Many in the USA feel the same, but there's a definite powerful minority of religious nutjobs who need to be brought to heel and prevented from f*cking up kids and dominating entire areas (e.g. Utah, lots of the deep south) with their unconstitutional, immoral brainwashing groupthink agenda.

As opposed to be being from a county (England) that took over 25% of the countries in the rest of the world. You needed a lot of passports to control that many people...

And I remember, an awful lot of American ships were sunk by the Germans, trying to keep your dreary little island awash in armaments and food.

According to Jane's Fighting Ships, Americans sunk about 95% of Japanese ships. You sunk about 2-3%. You are good at occupying other counties, but not at defending yourself!

You would be speaking German now if 400,000 US citizens hadn't died trying to keep you from serving the Fuehrer

And as I remember, quite a few Americans died trying to get your butt out of the WW1 trenches also. You just can't seem to defend yourself.
