Without having lived in such a system, I'm afraid you guys aren't qualified to make informed comments on it
I have lived in both.
And yes, I have read Wealth of Nations. They made us read it during the undergrad econ program, back in the ruins of the former USSR.

It has been a while, but I seem to recall that Adam Smith describes the advantage of having a money supply that is expandable/contractable, as essential for a growing economy. Don't really think that a dollar cemented to the supply of any commodity will fit that bill.

freedom means freedom to fail as well as to succeed. to be guaranteed sustenance is not freedom. In fact, it is a living death. The upside is stricly limited. It's a great system for people who think life is all about comfort and pleasure.

But of course, it's the people who love hard work that wind up paying for it.

It all gets down to this: who do you want running your life? You or some elitist beaurocrat? And do you see yourself as fit to run other people's lives? You might want to ask them how they feel about it.

Do you want to be told what you are to give your time to support? Or do you prefer to make that decision yourself?

Do you think the right to make those decisions should be fought for, should someone somewhere decide to make those decisions for you?

You ought to, because freedom is life. And it's your life, not some committee's in Belgium.
