Ups

Rainy season in full swing here, getting the occasional power outage now. These typically last less than a minute (last night there were 2), though one lasted about 2 hours some weeks back. The pain is with the pacing violation limits on loading IB data into Sierra Charts, it takes about 30 minutes before I can get all the charts loaded again. No fun, so thinking of getting a UPS but they don't come cheap and I do not want to overspec.

My rig is a Dell Precision T3600, main items are;

XEON E5-1650 processor
635W Power Supply
256GB SSD
500GB HDD
AMD FirePro V4900 Graphics Card (rated <75W max power)

3 Ultrasharp U2713HM 27" monitors (rated 42W (typical) / 100W max)

Modem/Router 30W max.

What sort of VA/Watts will I require? If it's doable for about $500 I'll probably get one, but the higher end stuff (>$1000) is simply not worth it for me.

What do you have the SC setting of "delay between historical data requests" set to? I have mine on 12000 milliseconds and do not get any pacing violations.

I have it at 5000ms, which if I recall is the recommended.

Just recovered from another outage, the 12K ms. setting works well, so again thanks.

I'm still looking at getting the UPS. Today was just weekly options expiration and I was only closing out one position. On the monthlies where I go into the day with multiple positions, having a prolonged outage could easily cost me.

Anyone know how to spec the UPS per the hardware I listed?

You can use one of these to measure electricity usage:

Thank you. That gizmo is unbelievably cheap and takes the guesswork out of the exercise.

You can also use a clamp meter. That's what our comp center guys use.

Thanks. Back in the day these used to cost an arm and a leg, but I did a search and they are really quite reasonably priced now.

A retail UPS is a "pay once every 5 years" kind of deal... Higher cost up-front, much lower cost when amortized over 5 years...

What is the cost of a typical outage?
How many can you sustain before it stops making sense?

Risk management/playing great defense applies your technology set up as well as your bankroll...

The answer should be obvious by now... Bite the bullet and do the right thing, even after adjusting from 5K ms to 12K ms...

I use them at work and at home.

Since the majority of our power outage events are normally only a few minutes, it's nice to have the juice there to keep the systems from being dropped.

Will your internet access drop as well? That depends on the provider and the type of backup power they're using.
