Upgrading Dell Optiplex Dell OptiPlex 790

Exactly. It's dumb to buy a weak machine then immediately upgrade. For that matter, computers are so cheap now, it's usually better to replace older machines rather than upgrade.

Even better value to buy "one generation" back... if the performance will be satisfactory for your needs.

Dell memory upgrades are always "well overpriced". Go with Crucial/other if you can.

If you want to upgrade storage, go with 250GB or greater SSD. (Most modern SSDs show maximum performance at 250GB and greater drives due to maximum "parallelism"... which is due to the size/number of storage chips.)

No "routine part" upgrades will void warranty. However... if you want to claim warranty service, you may have to restore the computer to original condition. (Dell Support isn't going to warranty non-Dell upgrades... nor should they.)

Better than "upgrading components", suggest buying used with the specs you require.

Many thanks for the education. I really appreciate your feedback.

I am now looking on ebay.

Check Arrow. They have decent prices and I believe a 60-day warranty. Coincidentally, I've learned that 2 of their regional executives live on my block*!! Arrow is a $25 BILLION sales company... not chopped liver!

*If you like anecdotes, here's one. Two guys, Regional VPs of sales for a large international computer/electronics company... both headquartered in different parts of the country and both with international territories... decide (required?) to move.... thousands of miles from their former domiciles... end up coincidentally ACROSS THE STREET FROM EACH OTHER! on my block. :)

Here's the Arrow Direct website:

http://arrowdirect.com/search?q=dell+precision#/?_=1&filter.harddrive=250&page=1&sort.price=desc

I am confused by their specs on this one:

http://arrowdirect.com/dell-precision-m6600-2-20ghz-intel-core-i7-gen2-250gb-131050mb.html

Also they don't list the specific processor just the generation.

Under memory it lists No... but in the title it lists 131050MB

I think the 131050 mb is supposed to be 31050 mb??

Here's the spec sheet for the m6600, it says max ram is 32GB at 1333MHz.
