Updating IB TWS Safely?

Hi all,

Short question: Can I upgrade IB TWS without losing my settings, e.g. investment groups/profiles etc., or will they be lost?

Usually it works flawlessly. But to be on the safe side just make a backup of the directory using zip etc.
 
Do a new install, you can have multiple versions of TWS. Make sure you save your settings locally just in case version incompatibilities mess them up in the upgrade and you decide you want to revert. It's a good idea to back up your settings regularly anyway if you have a lot of stuff in them (watchlists, etc).
 
i used to save my current settings, as a file.xxx of some sort

it's a TWS file option, up top, i believe

put a copy in another folder, if you like

It's XML. In the working directory for that TWS instance, there will XML ones for each day of the week corresponding to the most recent days that you ran it.
