supply / demand ..?...it comes down to math ..
day traders buy/sell/short as a result of their perception..

an example is today...mrvl..drops 3dollars then rallies 3plus to close at a new high for the day...
did the value of the stock really change..? ..the funds just took out all the little guys...math...and they do take advantage of news...although it is acknowledged that the brokers have orders to buy / sell today 1million of x...

portfolio managers are long term..18months -3yrs..
block traders ..100k shares is not really that big..
the market markers create the liquidity...even from themselves...to create the sceanario of supply and demand of a perceived stock value/price.
News does make a difference..todays news ? squawk box etc say..market discounted the news...always an excuse / explanation...
I can tell you that when Bush fired two officals in Dec 3years ago...He caused the usd/euro to drop ....big time....

Major News does play a role in moving the markets short term.

If you went short U.S. Bonds and Long EUR right after Bernankes appointment announcement you made some decent change.

Anybody else find it strange that the Dow gained 172 and the semis actually went down??

end of month pump --- institutions could not let a friday, as were pushing the gap closed, turn into a bottom breaker. they pump to hold the market and try to get us into next week to try and get some upward momentum started. end of month was starting to look real ugly for the funds --- they needed all the help they could get so it was time to commit some liquidity to clean up the mess. they have that tough spx 1201 level still above them to try and work on monday, if we do not get any tankage type news over the weekend.

we had a very strong "buy program" pump right as the es was busting 1194.50 with good es buying follow through --- that was a good clean breakout.

another note ---- look at how the russell did not join in the fun --- commercial players were in other products pumping.
