Unemployment extension still undecided as over a million lose benefits!!!

Quote from Covertibility:

How about before the idiot politicians sign off on CAFTA or any of these outsourcing deals and claiming that it is beneficial to the economy, they see job replacement in queue for those jobs that are to be outsourced. Otherwise, unemployment extensions should persist as a result of failed planning.

The structural employment problem is largely a result of conservative economists who don't bother with the real world as it conflicts with their imaginary fairy tales dreamt up in their textbooks.

With all the outsourcing to China and India, can anyone name any company that has recipricated jobs from either country to the US? Textbook says reciprocation should have happened.

Or just round up all of the illegal immigrants taking jobs from citizens and get people off their high horse that certain jobs are "beneath" them.

Social safety nets should be in place for those who can't provide for themselves, not those who refuse to do so.

Sounds good in theory, but the world is a global marketplace and that's not gonna change anytime soon.

On my last trip to China, I loaded up on Astor Chang shirts that would other wise cost me 5x as much. Why should I pay more so that they can have a central park south store and snooty sales people who look down at you because you're "only" buying 2 $150 shirts?

Also picked up 50 new released movies at less than a buck apiece. Hollywood can kiss my ass too!

No, creative destruction happens, and new opportunities emerge--but not instantly or in some imaginary tit-for-tat fashion.

However, with the tax/spend/regulate/nationalize trend out of Washinton, it's not surprising that new opportunities and industries are being stifled in the U.S. And no, gov't supported "green energy jobs" (largely based on junk science at this point) aren't the answer, either.

Quote from hoodooman:

Well, it's a good start. In order to reduce unemployment we have to reduce the cost of labor to make it worth hiring people. In order to do that, we have to get people to take jobs at a lower salary than what they made last time around. And in order to do that, we need to stop paying them benefits at a fraction of their old salary. It makes sitting around and doing nothing too attractive.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
And here's the way for the congress to make that happen. Each month the unemployment check is reduced 5% of the preceeding month's balance until it is below 1 cent.

Wait, WHAT? :p

Didn't we already do this by letting illegal aliens take over in southern states? Or by outsourcing to Asia?

You must be a Republican. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.:D

But you need to lower the cost of living.

100K college degrees and high priced homes and rent need to go down.

I would say they hurt the economy because we are paying people (a lot of people) to do nothing. There is no production. And there's no motivation to get productive because benefits keep getting extended.

Well, theoretically its to keep people from getting too desperate. Maybe there is some value in not having someone stab your mom while robbing her to get money to eat. At least thats what I tell myself.

Since there is a structural unemployment problem I think we should consider the creation of a new WPA like program to employ people repairing infrastructure, creating parks etc. If we are going to spend the money let's get something that at least arguably benefits society as a whole instead of handing out EBT cards to be used at casinos.
