understanding the causes of chart patterns

Ever heard of "support & resistance"? What was once a major support is now a major resistance.

Appears my attempt at levity needs improvement.

There are two white lines on the other chart. The red line is exactly half way between them. So it is likely that the white lines come from a high and low off to the left.
