Rote memorization is crappy old nonsense, which most schools still employ. But kids today have too many distractions now to learn by that method. Used to be that to solve certain math problems, you had to know those multiply tables. These days? Give the kids a calculator, or cell phone with a calculator in it, and all is well. They pass. So long as you allow cell/smartphones in a classroom, there is no learning. Why? Because it is all looked up on the Interwebs.

Actually Overnight... rote memorization of multiplication tables works. My entire life I have been a human calculator and I can attribute it all to a 4rth grade teacher that made a very fun game out of the rote memorization of multiplication tables. jmho.

It worked back then. I have a guess that is hasn't been working for the past 10-15 years. Else, why are kids/people from about two decades ago so bad at math?

Singapore heavily fines spitting on the street, probably the penalties for crime are pretty severe too. And they have a lot of expats that have kids in school, so you can't compare Singapore IMO.
You are right about the West acting a bit too much like they/we are sooo good. Everyone should have more respect for other cultures and be more open minded.

Because kids nowadays have it so easy. Parents don't parent anymore.... schools want to pass kids just to avoid being marked a 'bad' school... brains are being fried by constant binge TV watching... everything is being pre-chewed so they don't have to think for themselves...

I'll be damned if I let my sons grow up like that...

I got no problem fining people who spit all over the place or punishing other disgusting habits.
Why not pull in disgusting people and shave their beards and heads and put them through the car wash.
About time the US set itself some personal standards however low. The biker gangs for instance. Trash their bikes for starters.
Get smarter not grottier.
