U.S. Sen. Barack Obama expressed regret late Friday for his 2005 land purchase from now-indicted political fundraiser Antoin “Tony” Rezko in a deal that enlarged the senator’s yard.

“I consider this a mistake on my part and I regret it,” Obama told the Chicago Sun-Times in an exclusive and revealing question-and-answer exchange about the transaction.

In June 2005, Obama and Rezko purchased adjoining parcels in Kenwood. The state’s junior senator paid $1.65 million for a Georgian revival mansion, while Rezko paid $625,000 for the adjacent, undeveloped lot. Both closed on their properties on the same day.

I'm as big a cynic as anyone and I don't lean either left or right when it comes to politicians but after reading the Sun-Times article I just don't see any scandal here.

It looks to me like Obama wanted to buy a house that included a house and an adjacent lot, and the sellers wanted to close both lots at the same time so Obama called a guy he knew for ten years who was a Real-Estate developer about purchasing the other lot.

He later approached him about purchasing a small strip of that lot at a price equal to the prorated purchase price.

As far as why he can afford a house of that price, Obama is a Harvard educated lawyer and they do earn quite a bit of money. I believe he was in private practice for several years before his involvment in politics.

As Obama stated his purchase of the lot may not have been a good idea but I'd hardly consider it a scandal. I also don't see anyone suggesting that he received undue benefit from the transaction.

You're probably not a Chicagoan but what seems like an odd "coincidence" is that the latest high profile political indictee in Illinois is involved in a land deal with Obama. Not to mention that Obama's home is in an all black neighborhood and this Rezko character is white. Something's not right....

Well, he's obviously got a lot to learn about real estate. Luckily, he has the perfect mentors in Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton.

Did not know he was a Havard lawyer.

But if you are really making 165 k a year and travelling back and forth to D.C. and chicago.

Residences in both places, looking as well dress as he does, I doubt he made enough as a lawyer to support a 1.6 million dollar home.

Besides for the last few years, every time there has been smoke with these politicians there has been fire.

If I were running the Republican hatchet pac I would be looking into his finances.

I mean heck the lobbyists even got to war hero and wasnt the price of his home about 1.6.

The lobbying money in wash is a huge cancer.

This may get imteresting, because Senator Obama is polite & reasonably fast on his feet,[so to speak] in those 2 areas like Ronald Reagan.

However i am curious to know his stand on Communist Cuba/China.

Thinking a lot about that lately, most of the people i do business differ from me in religion/redemption or politics. Perhaps China learned more from a Ronald Reagan joke than Cuba did.
