Are all these freezes in Java version of TWS? What about their windows version? I have just opened account with IB and want to trade via their windows BookTrader. Anyone experienced freezes there? I have a separate charting package, and only planning to use TWS for trade execution.
Also, are there any advantages of using ButtonTrader or Zero Line trade over BookTrader?
Thanks,

See my posts in the Software section. You need www.prioritymaster.com to boost the javaw.exe program for you to REALTIME and to lower all other apps in priority.Quote from local_crusher:
As some of you may have realised, markets are a little over-active this week.
Regarding IB: The network connection is fine, but this bloated Java TWS thing "hiccups" each time much market data comes in.
CPU - Useage goes to 70 - 100% for a few seconds, the whole "software" freezes as it processes the data.
May have to do with that dumb Java garbage collection.
Not good. really !!!!
Not true....I'm running ThinkorSwim's platform and it's solid....and all Java. I would bet that running TWS on a Linux platform would be much better.....Windows/XP is just horrible.....there are too many things (mostly useless) going on....and Java is relegated a low priority (I think Bill Gates did that purposely !)Quote from ratewhore:
any java platform is going to have issues in this market; java platforms were ok about 3yrs ago; you guys need a program based platform; mine has been working fine this wk; only takes about 10 mbs of ram.

I'd be a little cautious with BookTrader. I used this from the beginning. But in the recent couple of weeks, you could click on it to make a trade, and nothing would happen. Several clicks, nothing. Enough clicks and eventually it would work. This happened periodically. I reported it to IB...they said they couldn't duplicate it. I took this to mean they couldn't correct what they couldn't duplicate....so I shitcanned BookTrader. Now using ButtonTrader with no problem at all.
I haven't had any other type of problem in TWS. I don't use the charts though. I use the standalone version.

Hi OldTrader,
Do you have any experince with NinjaTrader? What made you choose ButtonTrader over other front ends?
Thanks,

Well, my problem - TWS taking a long time to start up - was just due to some weirdness with java 1.6.0. I uninstalled it, installed 1.5.0, and startup is quick again. I don't use IB's data feed at all - the firewall blocks port 4000 - so I don't use charts, backfill, option trader or DOM windows, etc.Quote from just21:
Did anybody have a problem while running tws on a new high spec PC? Were people with problems using IB for charts or backfill ? It may be time to upgrade the PC and use the old one for charts with a seperate datafeed.
