TWS hiccups in fast market. (JAVA ISSUE!!)

Quote from traderdragon2:

Using IB as a quote source or charting package is for noobs. Its your own fault.

IB is an execution platform. Period. Works great, no hang ups, hiccups, nothing, because I dont use all the crap they slathered on top because some people asked for it.

I wont argue about the charting, but if you have a better quote source, name it.

How do you like the dual core?
No complaints. But, really, with the exception of the TWS startup time, even my single-core hyperthreaded system is fast enough. I run TWS, plus WebTrader, Ameritrade's streamer (with around 8 or so real-time charts), Schwab's SSPro platform, and a browser, and it's all fast enough on both systems. (It did strain my old Pentium III.)

yeah i noticed the same with my mac. i had installed the SE6 beta but couldn't validate the certificate so i had to go back to SE5 before logging in....now i installed the regular 1.6.0 and things seem much slower. infact now my pc can't even handle the standalone no more, just browser based.

Are things better under java 1.5.0? I have 1.6.0 on my PC at work, and TWS runs much more slowly than under 1.5.0. It takes 98 seconds of CPU time upon startup before it even displays any windows, and deleting a ticker line takes 5 or 10 seconds.

My home PC, which admittedly is a bit faster (2.8GHz dual-core compared with 3.0GHz hyperthreaded at work) runs java 1.5.0_11. TWS startup takes around 10 seconds, and deleting a ticker line is quick.

My observations: I have a MacBook Pro dual core 2.15 ghz system with 2 gigs of RAM and the latest TWS and Java available.

Although quotes lagged a bit sometimes, I noticed no slowdowns from the TWS software itself yesterday.

Sounds like something is utterly fucked on your machine. 1.6 is faster than 1.5.x

to clarify, as soon as i logged in i immediately changed setting to SE6beta, i used SE5 settings just to go trough the certificate validation process. tws info shows it is SE5 when tws was loaded but setting were infact SE6.

yeah my machine is totally fucked anyhow.

I would like to know why it is that so many of y'all use QT in conjunction with IB ? I'm totally aware of how inexpensive it is and all. But is that the only reason?

I too have read from several other sources that QT is a CPU hog and I also know that QT has quite a cult following. But why? I would think anyone who puts thousands of dollars through the IB system on a daily basis could afford a good charting package.

Please understand, I'm not criticizing the people who use Qt with IB. I just would like to know if saving 50 to 100 bucks a month is worth it if it slows down your PC? Or let me ask the question a different way. Why not e-Signal, Qcharts, DTN, etc... and have IB TWS on another monitor with the the stocks you're watching loaded on a page and be ready to trade? With IB's dirt cheap commissions why not get a good feed/charting package?

What am I missing here thats so great about QT, other than its free or $60 for the registered version?

Because those packages are overpriced.

QT , other than a few bug issues, is quite full featured. It should probably be redone in a faster form though.

Amibroker is fast as hell, if QT could be coded at that level it would be hot stuff.
