To be fair... in an attempted assassination event of a former President, the FBI needs to account for every bullet which was fired, who they hit and the trajectory. Trump refused to be interviewed and refused to release his medical records to the FBI at first; hence they had incomplete information. Additionally it takes time to piece all the details together to account for the sequence of bullets and associated events. Certainly Congress will be asking the FBI leaders about the bullets fired at this event --- thus the FBI needs to have complete information. That it took two weeks for the FBI to finalize that a bullet or a piece of a bullet hit Trump is not surprising -- it should be taken as a credit to their commitment to be thorough in the investigation.

The FBI insinuated that he was not hit by a bullet until now. Why did they do that?

Like you say, they had incomplete information but still mouthed off.

No one should give them credit for that. Unless you are an idiot.

The FBI stated they did not know if Trump was hit with shrapnel or a bullet -- because they had not interviewed Trump yet or reviewed his medical records at that time. The FBI director stated this in front of Congress in response to a direct question.
