Russian authorities are prosecuting a pair of individuals accused of using state computers to illegally mine cryptocurrencies.
Apparently the alleged perpetrators used computer hardware of state organizations to mine cryptocurrencies through web browsers.
The Russian authorities are yet to reveal the identities of the two individuals, but one of them is a resident of Kurgan and used almost a whole botnet in different regions of the country. The only information about the other is that a criminal case has been brought up against the Russian site JSC Rostovvodokanal for mining cryptocurrencies.
The deputy director of the National Coordination Center for Computer Incidents held a press-conference and said “In Russia, there have been two cases recently when people were brought to criminal responsibility for getting access to computers [of state organizations] and using them to mine cryptocurrencies.”
People do the weirdest things to mine cryptocurrencies more efficiently, I don't even think these two are the weirdest.
