Think about it: what is the more fulfilling life? To just keep doing the same thing year after year? Or to have a new challenge of mentoring novices and watch them develop under your tutelage? For many people they prefer the latter, they enjoy the feeling of giving back. Without this feeling, nobody would teach and nobody would get taught, which from an evolutionary perspective would be a bad thing - hence that drive to teach has evolved over millions of years to ensure the survival of the species.
