Well... If you can dismiss all non blue account (or whatever it's called) in settings, you get civilized discussions. If media wants to amplify the shit talkers, it's on us to switch off.
Soap boxes become untenable when anyone and everyone is able to spew. From lonesome mentally challenged, bullies, smart asses or the manipulative groups pushing agendas, the idealistic space is easily overwhelmed and turns off the great majority looking to exchange ideas.

No one goes to twitter for civility, it's why the politics section probably sees the most traffic in ET. There is not one original thought in echo chambers.

IMO the top posters on Twitter are already leaving --- and requiring them to pay to have a verified account will simply accelerate the exodus.

I disagree. Anyone posting with a paid account will be able to claim the expense because their posting is part of their job.
Non paying accounts are anyone else wanting to discuss whatever. As long as the contributions are relevant they will be able to post. The shitposters will be deleted before or as soon as posted and no one will care.

The biggest issue these platforms had in their early days was lack of media content. It made absolute sense to encourage content creation and paying for it through advertisers. But Twitter is different in that it's become the country's de facto communication medium, for government, for business, for social, sports, etc..
Musk is fully aware that Twitter is a platform for individuals looking to make a name for themselves. It's another marketing promo tool for celebrities to get their brand out and for nobodies to mingle with them online and appear like they too are celebrities. Old as the world.

Actually I'm not of fan of Musk at all and have criticized him often, but his achievements are undeniable and his capacity to execute are unique. I was against him getting involved in Twitter because of the possible negative impact on Tesla.
Now he owns Twitter and there's no turning back.

I want to remain apolitical regarding his intent because I believe he is going to be apolitical, if that's still at all possible in the USA. He will clean house quickly and remove all those who think their jobs are more than their jobs. There's only one leader, it's Elon Musk. He'll take the aggressions and the accolades. I give him 3 years to succeed turning Twitter into a profitable business and a platform on which people will take the conversation far above the gutters that some want. Let 4Chan or 8Chan take that shit show over there.

Musk is already personally intervening to reverse well-deserved Twitter bans on right-wing figures who spread disinformation and hate.

The platform will be going quickly down the toilet. Musk should keep in mind that advertisers are watching -- and will shortly be bolting for the door. It is clear to everyone that Musk is working to rapidly undermine our democracy a mere week before the mid-term election.

So tell us what is the business value of running a Metaverse ("virtual world") which will only attract a small number of gamers and like-minded people. A few businesses and people will try it out as a novelty and not see any value after a while & drop it.

Of course technology is built into everything these days; phone, watches, applies, home network assistant devices (Ring, Alexa etc.) all contain powerful processing capability, But how does this translate into a Meta visions. There are much better ways to get value out of these computing appliances by actually improving the real lives of people (and their business/work needs). Most people do not want to live (or work) in a virtual Metaverse world -- in fact it seems to almost be a nightmare vision of mankind's future.

This is going to be very abstract but the ultimate end point of virtual anything is virtual computing. I get it doesn’t make sense now but it really is the future.

"Virtual computing" is only valuable if it adds value in the real world and enriches the personal life & work life of individuals by saving time or improving results. Virtual for the sake of virtual as some type of "abstract art form" -- does not provide any value and will not catch on in mass.

If you want the virtual computing outlined in the article (about N.C State which is located near me) then you simply can go to one of many cloud sites that offer software in the cloud (instead of your laptop) and use the cloud software for your design tasks. At this point cloud software is common and used by many companies and individuals. Cloud software is very different than Zuck's virtual Metaverse vision.

The issue is around how well it serves Facebook and its stock value to have that effort housed there, and not necessarily what the future of the metaverse will be.

I am saying the issue for Facebook/Meta.
