You're right, I think it's called defamation for a company. Although at this point Elon could sue for libel. Neither is at all likely, obviously, but the point stands that it's a serious accusation to say that one of the 30 odd lines in a balance sheet is a fabrication, especially when there's really no basis for it except pure assumption.
Tesla isn't done yet, imo. I think the pending changes in transport may give it a very legitimate powerful boost in sales - not from it's electric car capabilities, but from the self-driving ones. Self-driving cars are set to change everything, everywhere. 10 years is my guess for self-driving cars to outnumber human driven cars.

If Telsa is building battery plants, doesn't demand for batteries benefit them? Especially when you've got a VW guy quoted as saying "Manufacturing the powerpacks themselves is not in the cards. “This is not one of our core competencies,” said Mueller, who has faced pressure from employee representatives to invest in battery-cell production. “Others can do it better than we can.”" Very possible Tesla doesn't survive long enough to get there, but since this article is about what's happening in 2022 it's either around and selling batteries or not so it doesn't matter.
You should not read selectively. This was in the article too:

VW does not want or need Tesla batteries, they will buy from competitors who will grow fast.
And what about the cars that Tesla is building? They will have to compete with a lot of other constructors. And most of these competitors are far better than Tesla in organizing production. Doing worse then Tesla on that point is almost impossible. Adding the actual problems Tesla has already...
