Trumps Iranian Sanctions, what is he trying to achieve?

They have been and still are the biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world.
I have to disagree. In terms of scope and harm done, the United States certainly has been by far the biggest State sponsor of terrorism in the world. This depends of course on your definition of terrorism. I define it this way: "the threat, or use, of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims or corporate interests." I claim this, even though the Saudis, and other countries, seem to want to challenge for the top spot in the current world. We are at least as good as any other nation when it comes to righteous indignation. On that account we have few serious challengers.

Perhaps one could be interested in conveying the truth and still be concerned about Iran's destabilizing efforts and terrorism sponsorship? The truth is that unlike @Palindrome falsely asserted, Obama didn't "give" Iran $4B (it was actually $1.7 billion but if you're making shit up why not embellish, right?), the U.S. returned their own money that we had frozen as part of an agreement to reduce their nuclear threat. That's a fact, and no amount of evil on the part of Iran changes that from being a fact.
I'd caution that you not conflate my or @d08's attempts to maintain a fact based dialog with the idea that we somehow want Iran to stay as it is. In fact, you'll find that when you feel the need to make shit up to support your position it makes your argument weaker rather than stronger, most intelligent people stop listening to you when you're clearly fabricating support for your argument. So let's all agree that Iran does some bad stuff, none of us supports that bad stuff. There are a variety of ways to deal with that which smart well meaning people can disagree on. Some of us thought that freezing large parts of Iran's nuclear program and starting dialog with them was worth a try given that the alternative policy of the past 40 years has failed to accomplish anything other than making them a hostile nuclear state. You may disagree, and if you put together some cogent reasoning for another alternative I'd love to hear it. But "Iran bad, Obama bad, Obama gave the $4B in 2015 and THEN they started a civil war in Syria (that actually started in 2011)" isn't a cogent argument or even really a coherent one. Perhaps we can agree on that as well?
Very well said!

actually anything obama did - we should do the opposite - trump should imprison obama as a terrorist along with his man wife and fake children.

the number on thing would be to prosecute the Clinton and classify the democratic party as a terrorist group as well.

trump has a plan it's to make America great again.

you can dislike the man as much as you want but do you have to include his family in your vile rant?

I have assumed that, despite the rhetoric, Trump is trying to pinch Iranian oil market share for the US Shale Industry.

There appear to be differences between the grades of Iranian crude and US Shale, the former being heavier which makes it unlikely that the buyers of one would want the other.

Does anyone have any thoughts?
%% Most likely much, much more than that oil chart.
Iran lies like a Persian rug ,antisemitic, anti Christian, anti Israel, anti American, terrorists, enemy of Arabia. And do you remember they attacked our boats, + stupid enough to try to shut =jam shipping lanes ??Sanctions are meant to punish, in some cases overthrow enemy gov;not just move markets.

Actually Mr Trump already tweeted ''oil to high'', he is not really cryptic like some daytraders. Thanks; + yes exspect him to favor America, like a USA President should.....:cool:

The commerce department is inundated with over 30,000 requests for exemptions from Trump tariffs which they do not have the means to handle in a timely manner, and which are otherwise going to harm many small U.S. businesses and put U.S., citizens out of work! Is that what you mean by "favoring America." ?? Don't expect to hear anything about this from Trump.

...
2) Iran hates us because of what we do. Like way back when putting the brutal American puppet Shah into power. And then after he was toppled, funding and militarily supporting (including those notorious WMD's) the brutal Saddam Hussein in next door Iraq.

Not only that, but first we got rid of Mosaddegh, the democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran. Which is yet another good reason why Iranians hate the the United States.

from Wiki:

Many Iranians regard Mosaddegh as the leading champion of secular democracy and resistance to foreign domination in Iran's modern history. Mosaddegh was removed from power in a coup on 19 August 1953, organized and carried out by the CIA at the request of MI6, which chose Iranian General Fazlollah Zahedi to succeed Mosaddegh.

Yes, I have a thought. I think you've given trump to much credit for thinking of anything other then himself.

By trying to act tough with Iran he is probably trying to ingratiate himself to the Israelis, whom the evangelicals in his base like to see supported, and to the Saudis who buy his condos, stay in his hotels, loan him money, and bail him out of his failed projects. He doesn't want to make the Saudis mad by blocking sale of repair parts for all the military hardware they have bought from us. The starving of Yemeni kids or the torture of a U.S. resident and journalist is just an inconvenience to Trump that he is forced to lie his way around.
