There should be a Federal law that if you instigated in any way to a claimed self defense shooting you lose your self defense rights.
The reality is that neither Trayvon Martin or George Zimmerman are individuals that most people have much sympathy for. Both of them had lengthy histories of problems.
That is going to cause all sorts of problems with the meaning of "instigated" -- for example is telling someone to get the hell off your property considered "instigation".

Most situations are easy to tell who is the instagator.If a trespasser is on someone else's property the property owner is not the instagator.
Under the law, Zimmerman was found to be not guilty by a jury.
